invisable links

Should I use invisable links within my page body?

I've heard that search engines use link popularity as one criteria for ranking sites. If I have several sites which I do not want to visibly link to each other (they are completely unrelated) is it acceptable to add 'invisible' links (i.e links in the page which are the same colour of the background and/or very small)? Will these count as additional links or will the search engine consider this to be 'cheating' and subsequently push my pages further down the lists?

Thanks..

I use small visible links at the bottom of pages.

If the site is so bad you don't want to be seen linking to it then there is a problem.

thanks Ian. The sites are not so bad but I run several sites which are unrelated to each other so linking between them would be inappropriate.

I think as Ove says the spamming issue may well be a problem so I think I'll probably leave it as the positioning of my sites is of high importance to me and I do not want to jepodise the positions of them..

Thanks
