Is there a search available in the UK to look up data about publicly listed companies? The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has a database of company filings that is searchable. They have the EDGAR Company Search [sec.gov] to look company names, and the EDGAR Full-Text Search [searchwww.sec.gov] that looks up text within the filings.
Is there anything like this in the UK?

Companies House WebCheck [wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk] is the service that you are looking for, basic information is free if you want more detailed information (such as a particular companies accounts) then a small fee is payable.

Thanks Ian. The company I was searching for is listed there. That site is good for general company info for free, but the info I want is all for £££. :(
I'll pay if I have to, but are there free sources of this type of filing info, like the SEC?

The fees for things are usually nominal, see WebCheck Prices [companieshouse.gov.uk] - maybe not good if you want to do automated lookup.
As far as I know there aren't any free services that will give you more than the basic info, and the problem with most of those is that the data is not up to date.
