I'd certainly recommend a .co.uk because so much filtering is going on with the UK engines and directories. No real backdoors to speak of.

OK, but you will not get into many of the UK services which WILL filter you out.
If you want to get to a UK audience, I cannot recommend it enough, especially as domain names are so cheap.

Yes, get a .co.uk, essential for google.co.uk 'UK search' results amongst others.

I echo the above. I strongly advise clients to go the .co.uk route if they are targetting UK buyers. Why just throw away potential customers by having a domain that will be filtered out of searches?

I agree with the others, a .co.uk address is essential for the many directories and se's in the UK.

Why not get both .com and .co.uk, and target each at different places - .co.uk for domestic and .com for worldwide (especially if written in loads of languages).

I know they've all said, but I thought I'd also echo the fact.

Look at it this way. .co.uk domains can get easily onto both uk and com versions of a search engine, whereas .com domains have problems getting on to the uk search engines. If you want the greatest coverage (aside buying both), then get the .co.uk domain. :)
