In a black hole

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can get my site listed in UK excite and Lycos. Initially being very wet behind the ears I submitted under www. mysite.com. ( I rank well in the .com's of these engines, but I'm not after world traffic) I then realised that they were filtering out the .com's in the UK portals. So, I resubmitted under my .co.uk domain address. But, in 5 months I still am not listed. I have written many times to the SE's but have received no reply. Obviously I have made a big error. Is there anyway of getting out of this no hope situation? Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

I've not had trouble with Lycos UK but then I haven't tried a .com first. Do you have any links to your site from others that are indexed? That works quite well. You could also try via the uk Lycos directory.

With regard to Excite uk, they are very slow to update. You may find it's worth paying LookSmart uk to get in there.

Good luck.

Another thought - is your .co.uk site identical?

Thanks for your quick reply.
Yes I have links to other sites, but of course they date back to when I submitted everything under www.mysite.com. I am listed in the Lycos directory, but again under.com. I have already paid for submission into Looksmart UK and yes you guessed it - under.com. I think I've really fouled up here. I could kick myself as I have excellent ratings in Lycos & Excite.com.
Yes my .co.uk is identical, I thought in my ignorance that I just needed .co.uk address in case someone putting either url in their browser would still be able to find my site.

Suet, you are NOT alone.
I've got exactly the same situation for a site that I inherited. The .com, submitted originally by my client, is attracting other than uk enquiries.

Oldtimer is right - I'll be doing exactly as described, and will produce a UK website that is NOT a mirror of the .com

>links to other sites

I meant others to you, so that the spiders follow the links to you.

>listed in the Lycos directory

but is that the Lycos.co.uk directory - not the same as the .com

With regard to the .co.uk site, if it just pointed to a .com site, that doesn't tend to work - especially not with Excite, the spider 'sees through it' to the .com

To have an identical site is risky (AV might get you on that). You would be wise to recreate the co.uk site to make it appear different - failing that, can you get a similar domain name and build another site? Doing that (well both) has an added bonus in that by linking them together you provide more external links

Thanks for your helpful suggestions, do you think it is worth my while going to the trouble of creating a new site for the extra traffic? At present we are in the top 3 of Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Fast for nearly all the keywords we think are important. What percentage of traffic am I throwing away not being in Lycos & Excite?

I would say probably very little - see 2 views here [webmasterworld.com]

It partly depends on the subject of your site. If you're doing so well on the others - ?including Google & Yahoo uk - it may not be worth it unless you do just a simple site.

<added>it also depends on how much it irritates you not being in those two!</added>

Lycos.co.uk is using Fast with a .co.uk filter. Excite and Lycos.co.uk are very good providers of UK traffic and well worth getting listed in.

You are say that "At present we are in the top 3 of Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Fast". Is the .com site listed in Yahoo, Dmoz and Looksmart .com directories? Or are the MSN and AOL listings a result of being in the INK db and the Yahoo a result of Google?

We are listed in the regional Dmoz, and UK Yahoo and Looksmart. AOL and MSN are paid listings. Our site is listed in Fast under both co.uk and .com.
I can't understand why we have n't been banned from Fast as it looks like we have submitted a mirror site.

This is of course another error on my part, as I did not realise the mirror site issue until too late. Pass me another horsehair shirt.

Okay, that means that you are listed in the Excite and AV.co.uk directories.
AV.co.uk can that along time to list a site in the main Db. Mine took 8 months. Once listed in the main AV db, AV will spider and update your site on a regular bases.

Build the .co.uk site(not a mirror) interlink the two sites and submit it to Fast and Google.

I've read somewhere that if you have an excite email address, it will help you get listed in Excite faster ;)

I couldn't believe till I saw it, I enrolled for an excite.co.uk email and submitted some sites, and they were spidered and indexed in four weeks.

Hope this helps
