Could anyone tell which SE's are most popular in the UK. I work for a SEO in the US and we recently acquired some UK clients that wish to be listed in the local indices. My thanks in advance.

Hi seoptimizer2001,

Your best bet is to go with the top engines/directories in this order:
Yahoo UK
Google/uk version uses global db, filtering results.
AVUK uses separate db to .com
Fast
ODP
Ink delivered through hotbot uk and many portals.
Lycos (directory)
Excite
Looksmart UK
UK Plus

If you take a look through the UK & Ireland forum you'll find lots of other SE's and directories too.

Engine you have Looksmart UK too low down. A good description on Looksmart will give you a top ranking on MSN. I would put it up around AV UK. I also get a good amount of traffic from Lycos and Excite, and I would put them both ahead of Fast.

And no Ask Jeeves! I'd put them third.

Love these threads :)

Freeserve is still a big driver of traffic with UK GoTo listings and without on B2C type queries. On certain sites 1,000+ uniques a day, only beaten by MSN! B2B is a trickle though.

>B2B is a trickle though.
Much will depend upon the type of site being marketed.

On reflection, MSN IS important and you can get in through Ink or Looksmart. I'd still stand by the importance of Fast as it is serving more data every day.

Ask Jeeves, again, Yahoo listings will help there. Remember, AJ in the UK is ask.co.uk [ask.co.uk].
As a portal, yes, AJ and Freeserve (Goto/Ink) are important.
