just noticed some changes with our friends they're now showing images from the website on the search listing! it doesn't look like paid listing similar to "featured listings" on their big sisters site check out search under "swimming pools" and you'll see what i mean

Hi Tigger, thanks for the heads up.

Check out the conversation here http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum1/562.htm [webmasterworld.com]

I don't think anyone is quite sure yet what the criterion is to show the picture. Do you have any ideas?

no it looks random, although hard to beleave, but what a great way to increase traffic to a site. I didn't know if it was looksmart listing ?

Just wondering if a banner add is on the way "want to show images of your site next to the listing, click here to find out how much "

This is certainly one that I would like to crack. I have pretty good rankings in AV UK, but knowing how to get a picture could provide a massive boost. I have not done too much research yet, but I have noticed that the image does not always appear on every search for a particular page.

Try this search [search.uk.altavista.com] and this one [search.uk.altavista.com]

Incidentally does the 2nd search indicate that the text in an external link is more important that the title of a page ?

Some quick observations, but as mark_roach say's this needs nailing down, those images will *really* draw the click:

I'm looking at what they are "avoiding" in choosing what to display. Size seems to be a factor in that they "skip over" the traditional button type navigation graphics. They also seem to avoid anything with a banner type size ratio. As for positioning they seen to aim for below the middle point of the page. The easiest way to force the choice of image is to only have one.

check out swimming pools, they seem to have covered just about most things text, picture, logo.

I'm just wondering if this ins't just completely random, one thing I've noticed with my only 2 clients that have pictures next to the listing is, if another search is done under a different keyword the picture is displayed again

This may be a point. I'm off to experiment.

Not entirely, I've seen some images from the top too, although images in tables may help to throw this out.
