They are still spinning out the usual offer of £299 for a keyphrase ad per year. The ad gets displayed AdWords style on the right hand side of the page. I was also offered two keyphrases for £500 per year.
When the lady asked how that sounded, I just said that Lycos (including Overture listings) accounted for only 0.2% of traffic last month. She soon said goodbye :)
I know much about the Lycos resellers, the main contract - and what the sales people tell clients. I also have access to a tool that gives impressions for the phrase.
Unfortunately I know that the situation is not good as I know what the sales team are told to say and I know what searches Lycos gets in respect of what they are selling - so do they.
The reality is harsh, Lycos gets a surprisingly few searches for pretty much anything you wish to purchase. That is not their core business. I am not saying that Lycos even know about this, but the size of the contract allows them to be able to turn a blind eye if necessary.
I don't want to mention companies and exact sales tactics without it being allowed by a moderator. I just can't allow myself to skip past these type of posts that have been happening over the past year. If a moderator wants to post and give me the go-ahead I have no problems listing the companies, what they sell, the horrendous lies that are told (but not in hard copy so no comeback) etc. then I will. You may say who am I to know - well I can't disclose that exactly but am in the area!
I just thought it might be important to give some heads up for what is going on out there - especially in view what is happening with a certain SEO in the states.
