What do people really prefer - or is this just to big a question to measure accurately enough for it to be answered?

People prefer free inclusion as the cheapest long term traffic source. However it is not always possible to get good rankings immediately so PPC makes a good stop gap solution which will be used as long as a good return on investment can be achieved.

I think we've seen the last of Free inclusion on the web.
Unless someone offers the occassional freebie advert or something.

maybe in the future, but not yet surely? many many sites are not using ppc (including this one) and are getting plenty of traffic
