Has anyone had any experience with a Silver listing in the Applegate Directory for £245 a year?

Sounds like quite a lot of money to me.

It is possible to see just how many pageviews each company listing has had, so you can judge for yourself. Below each individual company listing the page says: "The number of times that this company page has been viewed can be seen on the results page for XXXXX". Click on the link and it will give you a historical breakdown month by month of all the pageviews.

I did a quick sampling and saw that companies were often getting 20-50 page views per month. It doesn't appear to state anywhere whether that number includes search engine bots and other automated crawlers, but I would expect it to.

Applegate is supposed to be used by other people in industry, so the value of a link can't necessarily be judged in comparison to Yahoo, for example. I have no experience of it though.
