I am looking at it from Webmaster/Developer perspective, hourly rate wise.

What he did opens whole other can of worms. Cauz he wanted too, entire web has to re-program that fand-dang Icon now. Be it on a website in the footer, email attachment image that is sent in your promotion and so on and so on.

I have several clients so far when asked if they want to do the change(billable time) that said: it's a Bird, It's a Plane = F Musk(shorten term for clarity).

Only One, so far, came Down the Chimney knocking: We have to do this right away, get rid of poultry now, I want my fat X and I want it now!

I spoke with some friends that are developers for larger shops.

The entire app in some cases needs to be recompiled, pushed to QA, pushed to production, ...etc

Most businesses plan these things in advance; after all most people in the business were aware it was in his mind. Unfortunately, he's not most businesses, and is not really self aware of the implications of this, and many other things he's done: Some of them quite negative.
He could have said it'll change in September, or whenever, but not immediately.
I also suspect there's nobody in a position to advise him.
