Twitter has announced that its Blue subscribers in the U.S. allows up to 4,000 characters.

It seems this decision is fundamentally changing Twitter, and it may turn off some users, imho.

we know longer Tweets could mean a lot of scrolling, so they’ll be capped at 280 characters on your timeline and you’ll see a “Show more” prompt to click and read the whole Tweet.

I wonder if that change was involved in yesterday's confusing 'over the limit' outage some were having.

boo hoo

Twitter is a global network of users, so when something happens in the world it shows up there first, like the Earthquakes this week.

Why do you think traditional media keeps quoting Twitter? Members having extra characters available won't change what Twitter is.

seems like a good idea if they're capping the amount you can actually see on your timeline to a normal tweet length.
it's better than how it works now, with people splitting their essay up into 10-20 tweets and then having them all appear on your timeline at once.

people are saying the old way was better because you had to condense your thoughts into a couple of sentences, but people will still have to do that if it only shows the first 280 characters. they'll have to write a decent intro paragraph to tempt people to expand it

The 4,000 could actually clean up some twit posts, and "reduce" the number of tweets per day on the system!
