1. Spend all day following other accounts, some of them follow you back
2. Tweet extremely contraversial (but legal) political stuff
3. tweet loads of random keywords - there are plenty of bots that will retweet or follow based on a keyword list.

... but i'd suggest you work out why you want to increase your followers, that would give you a better idea of the kind of followers you want and you could then plan how to get those type of people to follow you.

You can try humor (but pick and chose topics carefully, won't know who might be offended). You could be an activist (but be careful, you might alienate whole swathes of the web). You could provide insightful information (but might have folks disagree). Run for political office (sure to generate a lot of tweets, but then having to actually fund a political campaign might be expensive).

There's no quick way to increase followers. The paid versions have been caught out and are being shut down. Fake and bots are pretty useless.

I'd go with QuarterPan's suggestion: Be Interesting. :)

I recon that only one in five people who follow me are actually interested in following me. The rest are just after follows in return.They don't get them.

Just to add to my previous post. I have been watching my follower numbers closely during June. The overall figure has been increasing steadily but, with little or no change to the number of views that each tweet gets.

One of my business customers (a small music venue) started using Twitter recently and they told me that they seem to get followed by anybody who isn't part of their target audience.

Yes, your tweets appear at your follower's timeline, but, buried in the middle of hundreds, thousands or more others. If your followers are following lot of other accounts, chances are your tweets will be unnoticed and/or not in those displayed, on the screen.

Use the follow-unfollow strategy. Find the right and relevant channels for your niche, follow a bunch of the people there, after a while some of them follow you back, unfollow the rest of them. Works every time, the better your content and profile the faster it works.

I like to add a twist here as well. For some users that you find more interesting or influential than others, as you follow them, drop them a few likes and shares, and even some comments too. It drastically improves your chances of getting a follow back.
