Twitter adds two new features being rolled out to users in the coming days.

Direct group chat messaging was on the cards for a while, and the video editing and uploading will help bring video right into twitter's hands.

The group function lets you start conversations with any of your followers and they don’t all need to follow one another in order to chat. You can create a group in just a few taps. When you’re added to a group, you’ll get a notification.Twitter New Group Direct Messaging and Video Edit From Twitter App [blog.twitter.com]
The Twitter you experience today is rich and immersive, full of images, gifs, Vines, audio files and videos from some of the world’s most recognizable figures and brands. And starting today, everyone will soon be able to seamlessly capture, edit and share videos right from the Twitter app, too.

The group messaging feature will compete against Whatsapp groups.

Over the last few months here in Hong Kong, several journalists took their group conversations to Whatsapp. I know some large wire services teams have setup internal whatsapp groups for journalists / editors and other to work on real time stories.

Are the WhatsApp Groups using the Open Whisper Systems (developer of the Signal, Redphone, and TextSecure apps) end-to-end encryption? That would make them a whole lot more secure than putting your stuff in a Twitter group, and thus I could see the appeal to journalists. There's nothing in the Twitter announcement about security...only privacy.
