You will get some action ... but will it be SEO?
Some have managed to gain visitors to their site via SM, but the majority have had mixed results.
Any benefit will be entirely on how much time and effort is expended on SM to drive traffic ... and since these are cross platforms with different expectations the concept of old school SEO might not apply.
On the other hand, if you just want to get the word out that example.com exists and come see that we have, then SM works ... to a point.

Traffics from social media is referral traffics, and not organics traffics. This kind of traffics (referral traffics) its give you impact temporarly, not for long term if compare with organics.

The amount of traffic you can get from social networks depends on :
- how many people are effectively seeing your post/message, this is not because you post a message on a social network that it means it will be really seen. In the other hand, if your message becomes viral it can be millions of views, and thousands or more of visits to your site ... keep in mind that lot of Social networks users are never going "outside" these networks, some do not even know internet sites exists outside of Social networks ... :)
- and of course, no matter how much people see your message, you must think on "why would people click the link".

Social Media Sharing will not affect SEO, it will affect to get traffic for your website and you can hold your visitor with social media posts by maintaining the Social Pages.
Social Media Sharing - will come under Social Media Optimization (SMO)
To get the traffic to your website we use two different ways that are by SEO & SMO both are Optimizations. SEO used to get organic traffic from Google search engine & SMO used to get traffic from different Social Platforms.

It depends on how would you do it. Commenting in relevant yopics or threads or creating a popular question would definetely help. Spamming mindlessly would get you banned.

Social is not actually connected to the SE serps ... so is probably marginal at best, and short term for the long haul. SM is momentary viral, not repeatable year on year.
