In quora, for branding purposes
You mean to improve the brand of Quora, or your own brand ? ... Because you know with Quora, and other sites of this kind, the benefits go mostly to them ...
By the way, it depends of the image you want to give to your brand, as well as your niche. Having the photo of a person (real one, I hope), might be more friendly, you exchange with a person, not a "company". You might try to combine the logo with the photo, like for example, the logo of the brand in the background, or in the corner.... on small image, the corner might be good idea, you can also create page curl effect, revealing the logo. I think it can be neat. You need to experiment.
As for the second question, if this is to establish a brand, then the brand name has to be mentioned, so I would go with "John from Pepsi".

I would also go with a personal photo, not a logo. People online want to connect to other people, not faceless companies. You can make clear that you work for a certain company (I've seen people do that) but definitely go with a personal profile.

When it comes to taking part in online communities one way or the other, it is good to upload your personal image coupled with your business logo (if you have one) - this is one of the great ways to build your online identity as well as build recognition for your online brand. Using another person's photo or logo is like hiding yourself from being recognized by your audience which reduces the level of trust people can build in someone like you.

1. Use a person's photo because this way, maybe it's easier to relate to them, which means that the answer could get more credit. 2. Use your name, and then in the about section, fill in your job title. For example, "Social media manager at Coca-Cola". I think that speaking as a person who works in a company is better, but of course, you should also talk about other products, so you don't look super biased, maybe even give a broader overview.
