I hope I'm posting this in the right area. The title says it all...

I have purposely stayed away from all things that relate to social media for years now, ever since the MySpace days... if you can call that social media.

Anyway, I am ready and interested in learning how to use social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Plus, LinkedIn, Instagram, Diigo, etc... to help whatever website I work on have the social signals and buzz associated with the site.

I'm not asking for opinions on how important each of the above social platforms are, how dated/useful they are, etc... I've already personally established that. I just want to know if there is a current guide for any or all of them out there that I can use to "study" and begin using them.

Thanks for your help.

Since each of these Social Media platforms is different and attracts a different type of user interacting in different ways, I don't know that you will find a single resource to be helpful. The "Best" is kind of a subjective request in that what I found to be best might not help you at all. For that reason the major Social Media platforms each has its separate Forum here.

A specific question in the forum for the platform in question will bring in far more helpful responses from experienced users of that platform who have done what you want to do with or without success and they're generally happy to share techniques. My own suggestion would be to look at the platforms one at a time and start where it looks most promising for what you have in mind.

These are the Tutorials that some of the top performing social media sites put up:

[pinterest.com...]
[business.twitter.com...]

The wikipedia site adds more general information and resources:

One of the best ways might be to attend a conference, such as Pubcon, and go to the social media tracks. Not only will it be educational, it'll allow you to meet and discuss your projects with experts, face-to-face.

Thank you both for your responses. I think taking the targeted approach as you mentioned might be the best way to go. Thanks again and take care.
