I guess it's time I learned some non-MS stuff anyway. What do you suggest as a good (preferably free or VERY cheap) server software and scripting alternative?

Thanks

Josh

This is what I'm thinking but is it cheap/free? Where do I get it from - aren't there lots of offerings that give you this combination? Which is best? Cheap? No more questions.

Free, Reliable, used all over the Internet.

Apache : [httpd.apache.org...]
Perl: (windows) [activestate.com...]
Php: [php.net...]

Also check out [mysql.com...] for a DB.

You'll then have the building blocks of a very useful web server. You'll also be able to apply your new found skills to many cheaper (& more reliable) hosting packages (Linux based).

You can also hang out with the open source crowd :)

Its like that song...the best thing in life are free...

However, you may have problems introducing this to management. (Who do you invoice>...where can you get receipts from...it doesn't come in little shrink wrapped box)

Sorry, I'm a bit dumb with all this *nix stuff.

Do I need Perl to run PHP or are they separate entities?

Wow, I've just been to the sites and got the downloads and they didn't ask for my Credit Card once. It's like being on an alien planet.

Whilst we're here, anybody have any favourite sites/tutorials for learning PHP?

<added>Ooh, and what editors are people using for PHP?</added>
