How to provide a domain registration service

I'm thinking of providing a domain checking and registration service on my site but I don't really know how to go about it.

I know a good ISP that have a reseller program, but I'd like something that's just fully automated and sits neatly in my site (and earns me a few pounds in the process).

So I'm looking for some guidance on how I might create or obtain a set of PHP or Perl scripts to do the job.

Anyone else done this kinda ting?
