Free referral script?

One of my sites is a paid membership site. I just set up a referral program for my members.

Does anyone know of a free script that would make keeping track of the referrals easier?

Why do people always put the terms "free" and "script" together?

There isn't much motivation to write scripts if everyone expects them to be free...
