Virus danger in scripts from unknown source?

An acquaintance of mine found a Perl script at a source whose reliability he cannot judge. He was a bit doubtful about the danger of viruses and asked me for advice. Problem is that I know almost nothing about scripts. I believe that if there is a virus in a script an anti virus programme should be able to find it, but I cannot claim with absolute certainty to _know_ this. What do the experts say?

I would say so, getting scripts would be the same as downloading anything else. The benefit is there should be no exe's involved and therefore make it easier for a virus program to find anything
