This is a great comparison, the best I've seen. He tested most of the popular languages, from Awk to Tcl, and in several different ways. Really fun stuff. [bagley.org...]
What surprised me the most was how the ranking varied so much from test to test.

WOW PHP seems to be quite CPU intinsive from what I looked at. (this is barring I didnt misunderstand the graphs)

Don't worry Knowles, it was php 4.0.5, if you have 4.2.2 and a little bit of zend I bet you could change those numbers quite a bit.
