I have been impressed by the message board MSN uses on their forums: [groups.msn.com...]

I like the way messages are posted the best. Their interface is almost like using Word or FrontPage. It allows users to create links, tables, upload files (i.e. pictures), ect... Also each member gets to store files on MSN's server. I have searched The CGI Resource Index for something similar but nothing listed comes anywhere near the level of what MSN has. Where can I find a great looking message board. I am willing to pay anywhere between 100-1000$.

Major drawback with the MSN boards...they run on MSN's domain. Doesn't help your own domain much. My current favorites are PHPbb, Snitz and vBulletin.

I would highly recommend PHPBB or vB.

They both are great. :)

P.S.. Next verion (3.0) of vB is going to have the ability to have static page.

---edit---

Well my dear friend, if you are willing to spend $ 1000.00 Why not take get it build?

I mean make a list of the software [Pick the one that has GPL License] and find a programmer who can hook them together for you.

You will have a product the way you want/need it. :)

almost any message board system can be rewritten to look as good as you want it. YaBB has a lot of templates available, so you might be able to find one there that suits. if not, i'd recommend you ask a few developers to quote for finding a suitable message board system and customising it.

I have posted on Vbulletin before which seems to work well. Thanks for the recommendations so far. I like the ones that include avitars. Members like to give themselves a picture to describe their personality.

By the way, this particular board won't let you post in HTML.

manuel, there are certain precautions and resource usage issues that have to be taken with message boards, you might want to research that a bit. Like with uploading images, MSN might have the capability of dealing with it, but not all sites will.

There are some people who swear by phpBB, and ikonboard is a snap to install.

The guy that first wrote ikonboard has moved on to set up his own thing which is at ibforums.com and looks very impressive.

The snitz forums have a links to all the major message boards they compete against. I alsways respect a company that does that. The bad news is their link led me to use a different board. :)

Here is the link with all the different boards available:

I guess I'm a little late in this discussion, but hey, I just recently found this site and I've been consumed just trying to catch up in the Google folder. :)

Anyway, I have a board running UBB.threads™ 6.0.1 and I've been very very happy with it.
