Europe's MEPs have just voted to make USB-C the common connection for all portable devices, and want "harmonisation for wireless charging."

It's objective is to reduce e-waste on all portable gear by 2026, such as cameras, tablets, speakers, and, of course, smartphones, amongst many other devices.

This is most significant news for Apple and its Lightening connector.

This is now a reality in the EU, and the deadline is the third quarter of 2024 where USB-C will become the common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras, with laptops to follow 40-months later.

The European Parliament has approved the use of a single charging solution for electronic devices from 2024.

By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. From spring 2026, the obligation will extend to laptops. The new law, adopted by plenary on Tuesday with 602 votes in favour, 13 against and 8 abstentions, is part of a broader EU effort to reduce e-waste and to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.
