Google has announced it's Assistant will be available to all phones running Android 7.0 Nougat and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Previously, Google Assistant was only available on Pixel, Google Home, Google Allo and Android Wear.
The Google Assistant will begin rolling out this week to English users in the U.S., followed by English in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as German speakers in Germany. We’ll continue to add more languages over the coming year. Google Assistant Comes To Android 6.0 and 7.0 Phones [blog.google]

I have Android 7.0 (Nougat) on my new LG V20 mobile phone. There's already a lot of voice commands available: txt messaging, navigation, local & web search, and basically any voice-to-text input (including this post.)

I rarely use it; just occasionally when I'm driving I ask the phone's nav app for a nearby gas station or coffee shop.

Getting the personal assistant update may give me an idea of what other capabilities are possible since I’ve been seriously considering buying Google Home for my music studio. The two devices will likely sync data through Google Cloud.

The assistant is significantly more powerful than the basic voice commands.

I rarely use the voice activation on the phone, preferring to key in basic commands.

Yes, I've been reading about Assistant for a while. That's why it will be nice to have it on my phone to test drive prior to buying Google Home.
