I'm looking for something that can get me online whilst away from home.

Not really sure whether to go for a PDA or a new mobile phone - ideally I'm after something that is WiFi enabled, and can dial up on its own, if there's no WiFi network.

The HP 4150 looks alright, but not for the dial up.

What do you use...any suggestions?

XDA 2 - I love my one.

No 801.11 WiFi, but you can get an SD 801.11 card for it...

It even come with terminal services!

thanks for the suggestion - the XDA looks pretty good - the specs only mention a WAP browser, but I guess it comes with the standard Pocket PC version of IE? I think I'll pop into the local o2 shop at the weekend and have a look

The new Treo works pretty good for me, but I sort of regret buying such an expensive device as I had expected to use its mobile features a lot, but as it turned out the alternatives like using the laptop in different hotels is the feature used most frequently.

I love my new Treo 600. I've had it less than a week and have already found it to be absolutely indispensable!

The new ipaq h6315 is a combo GSM, WiFi and Bluetooth PDA phone that looks pretty nice. T-Mobile has it right now. Its not on their homepage that I know of but Google can find the package.

I currently use an ipaq 4350, which is pretty much the same minus the cellular. Its a great little machine, but I think I'm going to upgrade to the phone unit pretty soon.

I have been a huge fan of the Treo600, but the new model looks like it will be worth the wait or upgrade if it gets released in mid-Oct.

I love my HP 4155. It's a great little PDA. It does everything I want, and is a familiar OS because it's windows based.

I too am waiting to get the 6315 when it's affordable.

I have an iPAQ h1945, and it's perfect for my needs. I have a Bluetooth cell phone that I use as a modem for the PDA, and it works absolutely great. It's main purpose for me is the Task List and Notepad to keep myself organized. But if I ever need internet access on it, I just use my cell, and connect. It's got all the (major) features of the h4155, except a slower processor (266mhz vs 400mhz) and a smaller headphone jack (2.5mm vs the regular 3.5mm).

I got the new Treo 600 a month ago and LOVE it. It really is like a tiny notebook (once you get Documents To Go 7.0 and SnapperMail) that's always connected to the Internet.

A funny story: Yesteday I got my phone bill (my first for the new phone). It was $1226.31!

Apparently, the Verizon store forgot to set me up with the unlimited data plan. I called them and I think I got things straighted out. We'll see when the next bill arrives. :)

I have the Treo 270. I had some buyer's remorse when I first spent $450 for it. But 3+ years later it is working great. The only thing wrong with it was the speaker went out so you can only use it with a headset.

I wish it had WiFi access, that is the only feature I miss.

I prefer the high res screen of the Windows based smartphones, but the amount of free apps for Palms makes up for it.

high res screen

The next version (Treo650/TreoAce) should have 320x320, finally.

>HP 6315

Just got mine today from T-mobile. So far, I'm pretty impressed. It's gonna be nice to have both devices in one. Of course, with any hybrid device, I'm willing to sacrafice a bit of performance for the form factor and functionality.

I'll try to give a good review of the device after I get some time to use it a bit more. So far it is quite cool, but I need some good apps (Looking in Jake's direction for a Texas Hold 'em recommend), and the thumb keyboard leaves a bit to be desired (handcramps after not very long).

Suggestions on a bluetooth headset would be appreciated too.

If you didn't want the phone aspect, but just a top notch pocket PC to be used for:

* browsing/blogging when don't want to carry a laptop.
* playing a few games on a train.
* listening to some music (don't need 1000 songs - can switch out memory cards for this).
* syncing with outlook and carrying some excel files around (so pocket windows 2003 i'm guessing).
* wi-fi enabled.
* expandable with random equipment/downloads for when you just want to see what else it can do.

What would you suggest?

I have a Ipaq 5500 with a sleeve and Sierra Wireless (verizon) cell card.

I also have a samsung 600 smart phone.

The samsung isn't very good at "surfing" (painfully small screen), but it can be good to check for emergency level emails. The nice thing is that it fits in my pocket.

The Ipaq is awesome at surfing. With the Sierra card, I am at a little better than dialup speed, anywhere in the US that verizon goes for $79 a month unlimited xfer. I also have the foldable keyboard for it. The whole package fits into a small camera case nicely.

The problem is that the Ipaq is heavy and fairly large. So, I don't take it nearly as often as I used too.

Thank you Brett, that was exactly the kind of info that I am looking for!

So is Verizon the best (in terms of coverage) unlimited wireless plan? is there such a thing as data roaming? (my main concern is PR)
