How do you find wifi hotspots when travelling?

I found a few wifi hotspot locator sites by doing google searches. Can anyone give me some feedback as to which site/s they use and how useful AND reliable these site/s are for them?

I'm asking the question for 2 reasons: 1) I am currently travelling by car across the U.S., in search of the perfect mountain bike ride ;-), but also need to be CONNECTED to work for about 6 hours a day (started from the California Bay Area and currently in Utah) and 2) I'm seriously thinking about launching my own internet access (wired and unwired) locator site, but need to know which features are useful for the road warriors out there.

I'd appreciate you input.
