Sniffing for Networks

What are you using?

I tried the Earthlink/Boingo software but the interface is just plain ugly and the program seems really simple (in Earthlink's defense, it is aimed at getting users on to its paid network - it just hapens to also find free ones).

Right now I'm using PCTEL's roaming client, which has a great looking interface but is not free. Also, whenever my connection speed drops, it identifies the network as 802.11b rather than g, and it says the encryption is "unknown;" it is WEP. Minor annoyances; overall it is pretty nice.

But I'm wondering - anything else out there to try for finding and connecting to multiple wireless nets?

Would that require some flavor of *nix? Or is it XP compatible?

bsd-airtools is unix only, I believe.

Have you tried NetStumbler for Windows? It's a sniffer only (it won't do connection automatically), but it's a great start, and it's not difficult to configure WX settings manually.

I had not tried it - I just downloaded it after your post. No wirelss nets in my office so I'll have to wait until I get home to try it out.

Or I could just grab my laptop and start walking around the building :)

Have you tried NetStumbler for Windows? It's a sniffer only (it won't do connection automatically)

NetStumbler does have an option that will configure your wireless connection to the protocol and settings of what it sniffs out. It's pretty close to automatic for me.
