Does Wi-Fi require a basestation?

Just a quick question. If you have two computers each with wi-fi cards, do they require a basestation between them to be able to talk to each other through wi-fi?

Extending this, can 3 computers talk without a basestation?

They should be able to communicate in ad-hoc mode without an access point.
