How do I get my websight listed on more search engines?

I made a simple websight (5-6 pages). It's been up and running a few months now. But when I do search from most engines, I don't see my sight listed. How do search engines get the sights? Is it automatic, or do I have to submit links to a bunch of engines? Thanks for your help!

Submit to DMOZ

Some major engines use this =)

Oh, btw, no it isn't automatic. Go to Google and type in "add URL Google". After that do the same with Lycos, MSN, AOL, Freeserve, DMOZ, Inktomi, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, alltheweb, hotbot, teoma, looksmart, altavista, netscape and wisenut, this should keep you going for a while.

Some charge and some don't but I can't remember off the top of my head which do and don't. Google definatly don't and through Google and DMOZ you'll get a listing in Yahoo and MSN.

I'll try that, sounds easy enough. I wonder why the don't mention that when they sell you space to make page...
Anyhow... I apreciate you taking the time to explain! Have a good one and ThankYou!

Hi,

I think it is better to get found by the search engines, then to submit your site to them. Maybe try getting in to DMOZ or Yahoo. If not try getting a link from a pretty good site in your field.

Mike,

Also be patient, I forgot to mention that it can take up to 2/3 months to get listed in some. Thats the maximum anyway, yet you might get lucky =)
