Somebody told me that including more than two hyphens in your file name could have an adverse effect on search engine rankings. Is this true? If tru, and I'm targeting a long set of keywords, how do I name a file? Thanks.

It is probable that file names have a small (maybe even very small) effect on the ranking of a page so I would not worry too much.
That said, I believe this is the first time I have heard of a "multiple hyphens in file name" penalty. Until I see some evidence I am rather sceptical.

While I have not done a comparison I use hyphenated names quite often and in fact am under the impression that it helps rather than hurts as hyphens are largely ignored by the SEs so, in effect, they become spaces.

I've been naming most files as word-word.htm or word-word-word.htm for a while now, and so far there have been no signs of ugliness arising outta the choice.
