XP IIS on LAN

I am really a newbie on web developing, please help!
I am a university student living in dorm where my local area network ip is 10.6.10.170. I am currently doing my final year project on asp.net web services. I set up my web site using IIS 5.0 on a XP.

Is it possible for the others to access my website on the Internet? How should I configure the IIS?
(Coz I don't have a real ip)
is it possible to make it like: [10.6.10.170...]

Do I need to need to make it through the DNS server in order to have a domain name?

Your IP address is what's known as a private IP address. It does not exist on the Internet, it only exists within your University. The address you actually use on the Internet is different from that one and it will be shared with many other students.

Your real IP address will be for a gateway machine. Although it is theoretically possible to route requests to a particular port (HTTP port 80) for example, I doubt your university administrators will do it for you.

Basically, your IIS is inaccessable from outside of your university. If you want people to see your work, you should get an external web server. Try contacting a web hosting company.
