Problems with my site

I have just created a website (<bleep!>) a week ago, which has been fine until today. It seems to be having trouble and every now and then will choose to display the 'Sorry, the page you requested was not found' sign - sometimes for my title, sometimes for the whole page. If you keep refreshing, you will see.

I have checked all the programming and it all seems fine - have I done something wrong?

Many Thanks

Joy

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, joyjudge!

Unfortunately, personal URL drops are against the Terms of Service [webmasterworld.com] of the board. You should consider editing it out.

This looks like a problem with the free hosting that you are using and not a scripting error. It could be something to do with your frames and the Geocities JavaScript file.

Hi there,

Apologies about the site URL. The frames have been working fine until today. I have made no changes to any of the site pages and have made sure since the start that the site would be very basic (in case these issues arose). I assumed that there may be problems with the Geocities servers.

Thanks for your help.

Looks similar to the problem mentioned in the thread Need help with Syntax error [webmasterworld.com]. That was a JavaScript problem in the code added by GeoCities.

Hey there.

Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure if this is the case for me as I don't get syntax errors. However, as advised, I deleted that section and then uploaded. To my horror, it was added to each page again! I can't seem to get rid of it! The site is still playing up. :-(

Thanks anyway.

You cannot get rid of the Geocitoes add on code at all.

Make sure that all of your own code validates by checking at [validator.w3.org...]
You can ignore the last 20 errors in the list, as they are caused by the popup advert code.

I have used Geocities as a test bed a couple of times in the past and I always make sure I add quite a few blank lines after the final </html> tag to visually push their code down the page a bit.

Hi there.

Thanks for your response.

I tried that site (and many others) and all I get is: 404 Not Found.

I am really tearing my hair out now. :-(

Thanks

I have a webring active on my site. Does anyone think that it could be part of the problem?

A '404 Not Found' would indicate some other problem than a webring. Something like:
1. wrong URL (but you will have checked that I hope)
2. file missing (maybe the upload failed)
3. some problem at Geocities outside your control

If you upload you use some FTP program or so? If so, can you still see your files with that FTP program?

Hi there.

Files cannot be missing as half the time, the site loads, if you keep refreshing. I am hoping it's number 3.

I did read this on another forum, though:

"For those of you not familiar with this, Direct Linking is posting or otherwise causing to appear an image which is hosted on webspace which one is not authorized to use. Whe you direct link, you are draining bandwidth from that webspace and costing its owner money"

Can this be a possible cause, as I feel it could also be a bandwidth issue...?

Thanks

With regards to FTP - I use the geocities site to upload any files, but Dreamweaver to create them. Locally, the site is perfect and everything loads correctly. It's hard to explain what is happening when you go to my site, because I am not allowed to give the URL.

Thanks
