I am running an asp ecommerce site on a shared server. I'm trying to make my dynamic URL's more SE friendly because at the moment, the majority of strings are very long and the spiders are not crawling. Some people have suggested IISRewrite and Mod-rewrite to me but until a week a go, I had no idea URL parsing existed so I'm learing on the fly in many ways. I sort of understand what they do but I am not sure if they will only work if I am running my own server.

All advice would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to specify mod_rewrite rules in your .htaccess file. So yeah, it should be fine on shared server setups.
