Hello,
I am about to build my blog and I was wondering what is the importance of backlinking in SEO? Is it a must? Is it useful? Thank you for any related comments.

The best links are the ones that real people will follow.

Chuckles. Since the advent of nofollow's rise at g's request, the value of any links has been drastically reduced.

Reality is SOME links from Very Major Sites might have a temporary benefit, but none are long lasting and you can't build a site/business on that. After all, users are a fickle bunch flitting about like a bee from one flower to the next...

SEO proclaimers will say backlinks are essential. In real life the only links that matter are the ones that bring traffic to your door ... and increasingly that is from the search engines and not from other sites, who have all been frightened to death to mark those as NOFOLLOW (thus you never had a "juice link" in the first place.

Put your time into the site, content, and other forms of marketing!

The two most important things that Google looks at for ranking are content and backlinks. So yes, links pointing to your domain matter. However, the first step is to create great content. After that, it's about promoting your content. There are many different ways of doing so and if you do a good job, some people will naturally link to you. After that, engaging in some real link building is likely beneficial.
