Strange to post a new thread about the introduction

No, just a strange place; the usual venue is the Community Center [webmasterworld.com] near the bottom of the subforums lists.

But if you think about it, a subforum called "new to web development" does seem a logical place to introduce yourself :)

Some of us have been here, there, everywhere on the web since the 1990s... so, short list (say five items) and in a new thread right here (new post), william17, what are the five new to web development thoughts/directions those looking to get started might learn/do first, after 1. having an idea and desire, and 2, basic html?

The old fossils like me, can't always remember what it was like to "get started". :)

I know what you mean. When responding to a thread it can be difficult to remember that "everybody" can't be expected to know X, Y or Z you always have to learn it somewhere. Just because I had had to master word processing and spreadsheets long before the web came along it's too easy to assume that others must have attained the same skill level before attempting to build a website.

Just because I had had to master word processing and spreadsheets long before the web came along

I remember one question from a newbie asking how to include a picture on his webpage. The replies were the forum equivalent of stunned silence before someone (possibly tedster, though I may just be making this up) realized that thanks to CMSs and so on it is legitimately possible that a person with a website would not know how to do some-given-thing.

On the other side of the generational divide are the people who use html as a word processor. Can't say I ever had to master spreadsheets, though.

Now just watch. This thread will continue into perpetuity as The Introductions Thread.
