What are blogs anyway? What are they used for? Can someone please explain or perhaps point me to an article or previous thread?

The word blog is short for Weblog. A blog is simply a content system that allows for easy posting. After the blog is set up, all you have to do is log in, (some blogging software doesn't even require a log in) and write whatever is on your mind. A blog is like an online diary.

Bloggers like to link. They link to similar topics from within their posts and they link to other bloggers.

Jon, beyond offering a way to post your random musings, blog software also can offer a content management solution of sorts. Non-technical users can create an article in the blog interface and have it appear properly linked and displayed on the web site. Not quite Microsoft Content Manager, perhaps, but a price of free to $150 beats $40K per CPU, too. ;)

Naturally, if you had stated: "I am curious about other viewpoints..." I would have answered quite differently by saying:

"From other posts I've read, it would seem that Blogs are the newest form of literary expression to emerge in years.

Some have even said (here at WebmasterWorld), that Blogs are a vast new resource of untouched literary talent (worth following) and they may very well have already made an indelible mark on the Internet."
