Is there somewhere I can go to find out about other people's experience with Open Directory Project?
Welcome to the public side of WebmasterWorld.
I think the directories [webmasterworld.com] forum holds all the good threads. The best about it can be found in it's library [webmasterworld.com].
I do not believe wich brand of html editor you used or if the site uses frames or not is a major criteria. As long your site displays right in most browsers, it should be OK.
Original content is theorically the major factor for inclusion.
There can be (at least) 2 reasons
1. No editor has yet got round to reviewing your site, so it is sitting in unreviewed. Depending on the luck of the draw, an editor can pass by to review it in anything from 5 minutes to a year or so. No telling what the wait will be :(
2. It has been deleted as being unsuitable for ODP. Usually because it is an affiliate site (though there are other reasons) Check through the editor's guidelines at ODP (they are available to anyone to read) and ensure that your site can be added.
the ODP is maintained as a useful index where browsers can find useful information/resources on what they are looking for, so you need content on the site whether its plain html or swanky flash
some other reasons:
if your site is in another cat it wont be added,
if your site is a gateway page it wont be added,
if your site provides no content and only consists of "under construction" pages it wont get added,
if its a frame they they *should* list the root file.
theres other reasons, but the main one is manpower, check the cat to see if it has an editor, if so then it'll prob be updated quicker, if your interested in the cat you may want to apply for editor permissions yourself.
