Google went out of their way this time to say ignore it and the last gap was about 6 months. What if they never update the outside PR again? I wouldn't be surprised.

It's ALWAYS updating, it's the toolbar that doesn't report it until they update that. Your pagerank is going up and down with every crawl. It's safe to ignore the toolbar since it's not live data.
