Its fairly easy to alter the depth of the emboss, its type and angle of illumination in that feature.
As you are in UK, if you go to a bookshop like Ottakers (don't think WH Smith have a large range) you can browse the shelves to get something that suits you.
You can teach yourself, but it really is much quicker from a book (or better still find someone to give you hands on). Photoshop is so large, that I don't think any of us use it to the full

should be able to teach you the fundamentals without having to shell out for a book!
I find the web very good for many things, but when it comes to learning the itty gritty of fairly complex software like Photoshop, I personally would shell out the fairly modest sum for a book (well modest in relation to the price of Photoshop)
