I have just started working fulltime as a trainee SEO and would like guidance in gaining a clear view of the interrelationships between search engines, and the best ways of gaining search engine visibility via paid submission for a web site hosted in the UK, and the names of respective submission sites...

Google - free, will index your site if it can find it by following links from other sites
Altavista - 5 pages per day free, no guarrantees but also have paid inclusion
Alltheweb - same here, free submission or paid alternative
Inktomi - recently bought by Yahoo, all SEO people waiting with anticipation what's gonna happen here! (Have paid inclusion)

You should also learn about directories. It's a good idea to try and get in to joeant, goguides, dmoz and gimpsy. There are numerous more but these four are really fab ones. Cheers!
