social media vs. optimization

1. social media, (adding links to facebook, twitter, etc. ) to your blog

or

2. optimization the blog, site, and/or both, preferably the site, which would you do and why

I only concern myself with the website SEO because unlike social media it attracts targeted traffic. This may change but that's the way I see to at the moment.

My theory is that if you sell small red widgets in Podunk, you should also expand to "Podunk widgetry tips", and "an alternative to big blue widgets."

Your seo efforts should focus on getting all these types of widget buyers on your site, and -once there- guide them to convert...

Targeted traffic is basically traffic that has searched for the specific product or service you offer. You need to do work on the SEO on your site. If you don't know how do this get someone to help you.

In my experience, a lot of 'social' traffic is just browsing. So even if they end up on your site, they're less likely to buy.

I agree on that point, for example you could get many hits from social networks with someone posting "check out this cool red widget" people will click it just to look but as they weren't intending to buy anything at the time conversion rates will be low, even if they did go on to buy it is more likely they will bookmark and buy later.

Also it's not very common for users wishing to buy something to search for products through social network. So a very large percentage of social media hits are people just looking rather than looking to buy.

The other thing to consider is that if you optimise for search engines some users could go on to actually post something they found through the search engine onto a social network organically. But it won't work the other way.
