Just be careful about which sources you reference. Obviously linking to the likes of CNN, the BBC etc, you can be pretty sure that the domain won't be sold on and/or the link won't stop working.
Two things you want to look out for IMO
1) That the link remains working, i.e. does not end up being a 404 (page not found)
2) For links to lesser known domains, you want to be sure that the news site remains a news site, so that six months down the line you're not linking to something other than the intended news article.
The majority of paranoia about linking out is that Google may penalise you for linking to "bad neighborhoods [google.com]" or have lots of links that point to dud pages. Your visitors might not like being sent to an off-topic site either.
If you think the articles you add to your entries are relevant and family-friendly, there should be no problem, and encouraged. The web was built by links...
