I just joined WW, so this is my first post. The real question is, how do I create a new server to host a site? I know that I can get free web space, but this is more about learning. I have heard that Apache is good, but other than that, I have no idea what I'm doing.

You don't "create a server" you may install an http server on a computer, and then connect that computer to the Internet (in very simple terms).

Generally, one rents space on a server, or an entire server or servers from a company providing such a service. You also need to register a domain name, and register its association with your http server's IP address.

There are companies who will do all of this for you, at a price, or you can spend the time learning how to do it yourself.

Don't even consider plugging your own domestic computer into a broadband connection and trying to run a web site from it.

Not so sure about that, this is for learning after all :) where's your sense of adventure lol

To be honest I agree that hosting your own site isn't best practice, you can get really good hosting package for only a few bucks a month, but if you still want to try and learn the basics by all means feel free to give it a try.

I wrote a thread some time ago that covered the basics of hosting from home. You can read that thread here...

In 99.9999% of cases using a web host is the best way to go, but from a self education point of view, and to improve your own understanding of "how the web works" it's sometimes good to have a play around.

Try doing a search for 'WAMP' and read the documentation. I had no idea about webservers before a friend reccomended WAMP. It's an easy to install webserver package for windows and taught me alot.
