tip 1) don't believe all that free lunch stuff. if a site could genuinely deliver a million hits for free then everyone would do it.

tip 2) it takes time. if you want great traffic from sources other than search engines or pay-per-click advertising then you have to get your site out there - have to get it noticed. you have to get links from related sites. and to do that you need a useful site with some decent content that people will be interested in.
i know you probably don't want to hear that because it's a boring answer, but that's just the way it is.

The 1,000,000 hits sites will work if you count having a million hits from bots - hehe.

Like the poster above said - create great content and start getting it noticed. There is rarely a quick way to do it.

I agree the days of making a million on the net without breaking sweat are over. You must create useful, interesting content on your website. You must also remember that the content must be useful and interesting to lots of people other than yourself, so be be honest with yourself when doing this.

I would have to say that when you're getting going, go loooonnnnnnggggg tail.

In other words, you won't compete against an established site for "snake oil" because, of course, *everyone* is selling snake oil and the top 10 in google all registered their domains in 1995 or earlier and have great general pages on snake oil.

On the other hand, there aren't nearly as many pages out there on "101 uses of inland taipan [en.wikipedia.org] oil." If you have a good page on that and the established sites don't, a surprising number of them will link to you.

Also, check out Stumble Upon. You can buy clicks very cheap. The people there are not going to buy anything (almost no chance, so don't bother with an e-commerce site), but if you have a good content site and they like the content, you might get some links, some blog mentions, some forum mentions and just generally get it announced that you exists. If you have ho hum content, Stumblers will bounce like rubber balls.

build a great site

...and work on link building.
They are the two components.
I hope you post your website success story two years from now.
