hello im new here my name is sn4x (obviously lol) i know html, xhtml, and css, i plan on learning php, javascript, xml, sql, c, c+, c++, and c# (and i have the sources to do so) i also know how to build computers (hardware wise)

anyways sorry for the long introduction most of my computer was learned from lurking around the internet, recently ive been trying to learn about servers and hosting but i cant find any info on creating your own service connection (correct me if im using the wrong term) to connect to the internet i was wondering if anyone here knows how to create your own service connection and the hardware needed to create one

im sorry if this is in the wrong forum (or wrong site?!) but i thought this would be the place to post it since im new to it and its the most basic thing you need to do web development

Hi there,

You question does indeed sound rather basic - especially since you seem to be a profound expert on certain specialist subjects. Maybe a general coverage on web developent via a printed introduction to the topic (ie., a book) would help you to fill gaps.

As for your question: I use either IE or filezilla. To use IE, just replace "http://" with "ftp://" and log in with your username and password. Then you should be able to drop filed into directories in the same manner as one does it in MS Explorer. Filezilla works similarly.

Before that, you need to register an account with a hosting company, obviously.

I hope this helps! Good luck and happy webbing!

i think you got a little confused abut my question

what i was asking was how to create my own connection to the internet not using an isp (yes now that i think about it isp is a much better word)

maybe i should say i want be my own isp to connect to the internet using my own hardware as a server

its something im going to need to learn for what i have planed

sorry if my introduction confused you

You will still need an ISP of some form (consider what it stands for: "Internet Service Provider") to connect to the Internet, whether the company provides you with connectivity by physically locating your server in their data center or at your own home or office via DSL, cable, T1, etc. Do be aware that many ISPs have strict policies about running a server at your own home- make sure you carefully read their Terms of Service.

The 2 main ways are as follows:
1) Co-locate your server at as ISP's (also known as a hosting company or co-location company) facility. You give them your server, they usually take care of all the hardware. Although you may also want to provide your own firewall.

2) Host your own server at your home or office. Contact your local cable or DSL company to get Internet access. They will probably send you the router that you need (or you can often buy your own instead of renting theirs). Again, you may want to buy an additional firewall. And again, read their ToS carefully to make sure it doesn't violate them to run your own server.
