Well I don't know if this is the right topic to post this in but , and i know the information is like giving gold to some one, but can some one maybe give me some advice on ranking in the search engines. I know keywords are a good idea, and help a bit but does anyone else have any other tricks they would like to share?

Thanks inadvance

I imagine that my views will quite possibly be ripped to shreds by those with a vested interest in the SEO industry, but what the hey... shoot me!

There's a saying that in real estate there are 3 key factors:
Location, location and location

In my rather limited experience (8 sites in 5 'niches') the key factors to high-ranking are:
Content and presentation, content and presentation, content and presentation

Content: semantically correct use of html
Presentation: use of valid CSS for layout, use of tables only for 'tabular data', liquid designs etc

If you write stuff that's interesting, accurate, legible, etc and then present it in a way that can be accessed by a wide range of people, then other (high ranking) sites will link to you - and hey presto!

Hey Brianji:)

Simple advice....

1. Content. Write quality content your visitors can use.
2. Seo your pages with the correct kws for your niche.
3. Search for quality sites and get links.

And finally, and very important, read this thread. It will help you very much:)

Here it is:

Hope that helps you Brianji:)

Hi Brianji:)

Where did you hear that keywords were a thing of the past?
Keywords are what the search engines use.

For example, if a page is about dog food, then you would add that keyword phrase a few times into the page your designing. And then when the software that visits sites reads the page it will see that the page is about dog food because it reads that phrase on the page.

By the way, don't over do the amount of times you place the phrase on the page because then it becomes spam. Also, space out your phrase on the page. This means maybe 40 to 50 words in between.
That's just my opinion. Others may use other methods in their seo.

Hope that helps:)

Hey Brianji:)

Yes. Since it is 2 words, it is refered to as a keyword phrase.

That's how i refer to it anyways:)

Like this: this is 2 words so, "dog food" would be a keyword phrase.
Others might refer to it differently.

If you need more explanation, try going to sites that have the same keyword that you are planning on using and see how they place their keyword phrases on their pages. That will give you an idea of how it works.

Hope that helps you Brianji:)

Good luck:)

Most people seem to take one of two approaches... There's the people that want to be using all the latest tricks to get to the top. The problem is that the tricks always change, and everybody is trying to out trick each other. Or... There's the people that focus on creating a great site and don't worry about it that much. I'm the latter. The way I look at it... The web is really just publishing. You get to the top in publishing by creating the better product. In other words, I personally wouldn't build a page based purely on the concept of getting high ranking. People are pretty sharp and they can spot that a mile away.

>>Where did you hear that keywords were a thing of the past?
>>Keywords are what the search engines use.

A little confusion here between the keywords metatag (so out of date I have forgotten the syntax)and ensuring that content contains keywords.

For example if your site was for a heavy metal band you don't just want to mention that you have a band, you want to mention that you play heavy metal.

Basically, if it is information that people will want to know then they will want to read it and are likely to search on it so it should be in the content.

A regular failure that I have seen is not mentioning location when relevant. (eg the restaurant that doesn't tell you if it is in Alabama, Albertia or Australia).

Reading Brett's article on building a successful site, I have a question on outbound links. He mentions:

G) Outbound Links:
From every page, link to one or two high ranking sites under that particular keyword. Use your keyword in the link text (this is ultra important for the future).

For example, if my site was on white widgets, I should link to an authority site on white widgets from my site , correct?

Even though that would take the reader away from my site, it is worth-while doing?

Depends a bit on the site. If it causes traffic for information in classes of widget to channel through your site then some benefit should rub off.

Suggestion: Instead of linking out to sites that already rank high for a particular search, see if you can find a quality site with clear relevance that is just getting established.

Link to an undiscovered gem and break out of the "rich get richer" linking syndrome a bit!

Hi amythepoet:)

Regarding your question on Outbound linking. Yes it is a good idea to link to other authoritive websites. Why? Simple. Search engines like it when you link to outside resources. It shows that you are willing to share information and this helps as far as seo is concerned.

Remember that the internet is a vast resource of interconnected information and when you are willing to share data, it's a plus for your site.

Hope that helps:)

Good Luck!
