Hi,

I'll try and keep this short and semi-understandable.

I have a great idea (don't we all?).

I can imagine how I want it to look (I always can...).

I'm just not sure how to translate it to a working design (...I never am!)

First off, I'm not looking for a youtube clone script; I plan to utilize videos already posted on youtube for my project.

Let's say I want to create a site spotlighting widget videos....

The general classification would be:

_______________________/bob's red widgets
__________/-----red widgets-
_________/_____________\sam's red widgets
Widgets--
_________\______________/sue's blue widgets
__________\-----blue widgets-
________________________\brian's blue widgets

the url scructure being

www.domainname.com/red_widgets/b/bobs_red_widgets/bobs_red_widget_video1.html
or
www.domainname.com/b/bobs_red_widgets/bobs_red_widget_video1.html

I want to be able to do the following:
* Add videos to the site through some sort of interface that would automatically create the page bobs_red_widget_video2.html...bobs_red_widget_video3.html...etc....based on my entered information.

* Classify the videos according to categories, i.e. red widgets, blue widgets, etc.

* Classify the videos according to author, i.e. bob, brian, etc.

* Generate the meta title, description, etc etc when pages are created.

I assume this would take some sort of database work (which I know absolutely nothing about)...I just don't know where to get started.

Aside from creating every single page statically (which I would likely die before ever completing).....or coming up with enough money to get it created by a freelancer (i simply don't have the funds) how can this sort of thing be achieved?

Thank you in advance for any help. If the above is not clear enough, or there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks!

-Justin

Start reading!

I think you'll find plenty of posts here on some starting points.

It seems to me that most of the popular CMSs would lend themselves to this. You'd need to learn enough to be able to set-up a database with the information you want, and an administrative interface to allow you to add new videos.

There are a number of video and even YouTube-specific plugins for CMSs that might be useful.

Coppermine Photo Gallery allows for any types of files to be used, really a file management system with emphasis on multimedia. Automatically embeds videos.

Still more than happy to listen to new suggestions if anyone has them.

jtara: Honestly, I've looked at a few CMS for previous projects...I just never quite grasp using them. Everything looked so generic and plain, and I suppose didn't really take enough time to learn how to work w/the modules, etc. Perhaps I can look into that a bit more in regards to this site.

thecoalman: Actually, I utilize Coppermine on another project....I found it to be servicable, but I don't quite think it's what I have in mind.

I was in a very similar position to you a few months back Zhariken. Instead of wasting the time learning how to mess around with opensource CMS I decided to make my own - it was a lot harder and I did use more time but I am now in a position where I have a fully functionaly CMS of my own.
I am proud to have built my own and I can tweak to exactly what I need as I know it inside out.

I found this thread and httpwebwitchs post like gold: [webmasterworld.com...]
