FTP issues using windows XP

I routinely have problems with FTP. I had mapped a connection in my network places using a non anonymous log-in so it views it as ftp://name@widget.com

It only works some of the time, I generally see the flashlight searching icon on windows and then recieve a FTP folder error and the details state the connection with the server was reset.
I have also tried filezilla with no luck.

The other problem is when I connect at home my ISP has a firewall in the router so I need to disable.

I have read an article or two but it just didn't address my problem. Are there any great resources or walk through instructions?

Thanks

You might find it easier to download and install an FTP client, Windows firewall may also be an issue?

There are many free or shareware FTP clients available.
