how to build a web direstory

Hi all,
i am kind of NEW to web designing, almost 3 months into it. Dont know much about writing codes or script (only c++). I created couple of forums using phpbb using free versions.

Anyways, my following project is to create a free web directory. After reading i have found the following:

-I need a database type script
-Php will the best bet. found lot of high PR sites are using php.

Does anyone have any idea where can i look for those scripts?May be i can have a demo software so that i can buy it after i feel comfortable using it.
Am i heading to the right direction? Feel free to suggest me . Thanks :)

Try looking on hotscripts.com [hotscripts.com], they have quite a few open source directory scripts that you may be able to adapt.
