Hello everyone. I was searching the web on the topic on “how to create a server”
I am interested mainly on the process of creating the server for gaming purposes
I am new to the topic. I do not have any special hi-tech equipment; I registered only to get the knowledge on how to create a server for gaming?
What will I need apart good internet connection and the game and operating system which can support multiple internet connections, personal IP address? Sorry for my English. I am Russian

No need to aplogise your english seams fine to me.

What sort of requirements do you have, will you be hosting your game server or will it be at a hosting company?

Mack.

it's really simple:
#1 get a pc
#2 install whatever server software you want for whatever game you want it for.
#3 your done.

Vali pretty much summed it up. Most online games that let you host your own game, such as Quake, Unreal, Neverwinter Nights, Baulders Gate, Starcraft (OK, I've got the oldies down :) ) have it built into them to allow you to host your own game (for you to play with your friends etc..).

Most of the games to start this, you start the game, select multiplayer, and then host (most games will not be like this, this is just a generalized FYI).

Check out the game manuals on how to set up a server for that specific game.

Thanks for that people. I am starting to get general idea. Can you tell me more about server software? Is it expensive? I am interested in creating the server in the web so that people could connect to it and play whatever the game is. Can you tell me more about games that have function of hosting the game your self? What if this is MMRPG kind game?
Thanks

As a few of the members pointed out already, most games already install the software needed to “host” the game. The simplest form of this is to launch the game and look for a “Multiplayer” option from the main menu screen. Most games will then ask you if you are planning to join a server or actually be the server. Your questions point towards being the server so select that option. Once you have decided to become “the host” you have created a game server.

Now to place this server where you can see it from the web you should search for an option within the setup that states something to the effect of “Make my server viewable on the web” or “Host game on web” which will allow players outside of your network to connect to your server. Other options would be to host a network game which would only allow other players on your network to connect to your server. This is the option that most servers at LAN parties have due to they want the server to be only available to those playing on the LAN (Local area network).

Now if you want to get into hosting a “dedicated server” then you might get into more questions about how much RAM your computer needs, what operating system you should place on the computer and what type of connection your computer needs. All of these questions are pretty dependent on what type of game you are hosting.

And to answer your MMRPG question I think you are referring to MMORPG which stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Games that fit into this classification are World of Warcraft, Everquest, and Vanguard. MMORPG games are very popular but are not usually hosted by individuals but rather the companies who created the games due to their nature.

Hopefully this answered some of your questions or at least pointed you in the right direction.

Thanks for that indeed. Referring to MMORPG, somehow in my country you can find independent servers in the web which do not belong to the company which created the game. The play cost is much less then in the actual company like blizzard, etc. I am just interested how others create servers like that? The server you will see does not require any payment to at all to play. I hope you have some ideas.
Thanks.

To host your own MMORPG server, you're looking at considerable startup costs.

You'll need a server that can handle it, which isn't cheap usually. Then, you'll also need a connection far beyond 56K, and much better than cablemodem or DSL, we're talking T1 minimum here which would take out a good chunk of change in your bank account each month.

Your best bet may be to contact one of the owners of the severs (or a few of them) and see what their setup is and how much it cost them. You may find that some of them own their own businesses and have this running on the side with their business server.

Good luck!
