Most of the games to start this, you start the game, select multiplayer, and then host (most games will not be like this, this is just a generalized FYI).
Check out the game manuals on how to set up a server for that specific game.
Now to place this server where you can see it from the web you should search for an option within the setup that states something to the effect of “Make my server viewable on the web” or “Host game on web” which will allow players outside of your network to connect to your server. Other options would be to host a network game which would only allow other players on your network to connect to your server. This is the option that most servers at LAN parties have due to they want the server to be only available to those playing on the LAN (Local area network).
Now if you want to get into hosting a “dedicated server” then you might get into more questions about how much RAM your computer needs, what operating system you should place on the computer and what type of connection your computer needs. All of these questions are pretty dependent on what type of game you are hosting.
And to answer your MMRPG question I think you are referring to MMORPG which stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Games that fit into this classification are World of Warcraft, Everquest, and Vanguard. MMORPG games are very popular but are not usually hosted by individuals but rather the companies who created the games due to their nature.
Hopefully this answered some of your questions or at least pointed you in the right direction.

[edit reason] No urls, thanks. See TOS [webmasterworld.com] [/edit]
You'll need a server that can handle it, which isn't cheap usually. Then, you'll also need a connection far beyond 56K, and much better than cablemodem or DSL, we're talking T1 minimum here which would take out a good chunk of change in your bank account each month.
Your best bet may be to contact one of the owners of the severs (or a few of them) and see what their setup is and how much it cost them. You may find that some of them own their own businesses and have this running on the side with their business server.
Good luck!
